Kerchaou Kerchaou is a village on the southern edge of Tunisia. The local community lives in extreme cultural and social isolation and suffers hardships due to desertification, lack of water and basic services, and rural depopulation. In this context, ZaLab TV means to provide a way to break the cultural and geographic isolation, by giving people from Kerchaou the chance to get involved in a cross-cultural, IT based exchange. Kerchaou Community Centre’s video unit (now _ZaLab TV - Kerchaou_) was founded in November 2005 within a wider cooperation project aimed at integrating participatory video into the activities already running at the Centre (IT, health awareness, training for farmers, adult education, and a kindergarten). The Centre’s first ever film - _1 Kg d'Internet_ - was screened at the World Summit on Information Society (Tunis, 2005). In March 2006, _ZaLab TV - Kerchaou_ finished its first long documentary, _K.E.R.CH.A.O.U._ The film was screened at the Ksour Festival in Tatatouine, and Decouvertes Tunisie 21 Festival in El Jem (Tunisia, 2006). _ZaLab TV - Kerchaou_ operates thanks to the help of the Centre Regional de Solidarité Social de Tataouine (CRSS).
